Wanted to create a more stable world where impoverished nations and those still trapped in colonial bondage could develop resources to build better lives.
             Bay of Pigs - invasion of Cuba to remove Castro from power in 1961. Operation was backed by CIA. U.S. were fearful of a Soviet ally and "unsinkable aircraft carrier" so close to our borders. Inherent flaws in plan and no support from U.S. military or government brought a quick and embarrassing end to invasion. The situation put Washington and Kennedy in a bad light, which Khrushchev tried to take advantage of.
             Berlin Crisis(1958) - Khrushchev planned on turning control of Berlin over to the East German gov't, and the West would have to negotiate access and control over the city with them. He wanted the Western military powers to vacate the city. The West countered that they were guaranteed the right to be there by the Yalta agreements. Soviets were pushing this due to worsening of relations with China. Khrushchev wanted results quickly so he could still derive some leverage from relationship with China before it went public that their alliance had eroded. As the Soviet deadline of May 27 (for western powers out of Berlin) approached, a mild war scare was felt in the U.S. Eisenhower dealt with the situation well and the conflict was avoided through a summit of foreign ministers in Geneva.
             Berlin Crisis(1961) - a summit at Vienna in 1961 between Khrushchev and Kennedy went very badly. Khrushchev tried to intimidate Kennedy and get him to accept a settlement which would force allied powers out of Berlin. Kennedy refused to back down at all to Soviet demands. Ulbricht, the East German president lobbied the Soviets to allow him to close off the border to West Berlin where he had lost millions of refugees. When a wall was built, the U.S. did nothing for it broke no agreements with them and was one of the only non-violent ways to end the tensions.
