Is living alone so hard? I believe it is. If we did not have someone to turn to in a time of loneliness or need, we would soon crumble from the complexities and demands we face continuously in life. The words sung by Barry Manilow "With you I can bring out all the love that I have. With you there's a Heaven, so Earth ain't so bad," say this well. We all live, needing companionship, whether we know it and admit it or not. .
I have heard many times about the man or woman who did not live for more than a week or two after their spouse or loved one has passed away. A person says, oh, I knew that he would not last long. He loved her too much to be away from her that long, or, did you hear, she died about 3 hours after he did, even though no one had told her that he had passed on, and she lived in a different part of the home. As an example, Betsey Wardwell, married William Crawfordin the late 1700's. They settled in Henry Street, New York City, where, about 1815, she died of yellow fever. He did not long survive her. Also, Dame Gracie Fields who married Boris Alperovici, died in 1979. She died first and he did not long survive her. There are many more examples listed on the internet and in newspapers from all time periods from all over the world. People need companionship and do not survive well without it. .
The internet in and of itself is further proof of this. The person who thinks he or she is a loner could be home, sitting on their computer, instant messaging someone else, visiting a newsgroup, or a chat room where they can be with others anonymously. The Internet was developed and formed by a group of intellectuals who wanted to find a way to communicate with each other without having to pay high long distant phone bills to do so.
