Homeless by Choice or Necessity?

I was thinking that I wouldn't have much to say about homelessness but I actually do. I have a friend who worked in a Pizza place in Berkeley, California, a place with many faces and beliefs, so to see a homeless in Berkeley is not strange at all. He used to bump into this homeless man that always asked for left over pizza, which he always got and through that connection they became almost friends. Until that day I had no idea that some people actually choose to give up their homes and jobs and not have any responsibility in life but to get through the day. But my friend was talking to this homeless man one day and he complained that he had had a "low" day, meaning that he hadn't gotten much money, but he made close to $100 dollars. That's more than a lot people that have responsibilities make.
So, apparently he had more than enough to spend any way he wanted to, since he didn't have to pay rent, electricity or food for that matter. Homelessness is a big issue in the Bay Area, especially in San Francisco, where the hippie revolution started. .
My husband who lived right on Haight Street and constantly dealt with homeless" people, which a lot of times were kids that ran away from home, had a hard time going by without given money to many of them. I, on the other hand, didn't agree with that at all. I knew he was just contributing to the person's problem and really helping them. .
This one time I was going to work and saw a man, begging on the street and holding a little cardboard sign that said that he would work for food. That day I happened to know that my neighbor needed help with yard work, so I told him and I offered to take him to my neighbor's house, but he immediately become defensive and said that he had a disability and couldn't do arduous work.
So I believe that there's no easy way out and we can not just pretend that it's not a problem and this nation should commit to end homelessness rather than just manage it.
