Teen Drinking

Modern society is plagued by a myriad of problems. Such problems can range from terrorism to AIDS. Teenagers are not immune to problems of their own. In particular, underage drinking is a common problem facing teenagers today. Due to numerous influences, teen drinking plagues our nation; therefore society must take action to remedy this epidemic. .
Any number of factors may bring on the onset of teenage drinking. The advertisement and promotion of alcoholic products is perhaps, the leading influence among teenagers. In fact, as we have so ordinarily seen, many, if not all, companies include famous celebrities in their advertisements and commercials that teenagers are familiar with or may even idolize (Monroe 42). In most instances, the commercials and advertisements we see are geared towards the younger generation, which includes those under the age of twenty-one (44). Seemingly, alcohol advertising is everywhere. The market for alcohol is so big that alcohol advertisements appearing in magazines, billboards, radio, and even buses are now commonplace (42). According to a study conducted in 1987, American children between the ages of two and eighteen see, on average, roughly 100,000 beer commercials per year (46). Thus, one can conclude that the advertising industry is a powerful medium that cannot be ignored.
Furthermore, advertising and marketing is not the lone cause of teenage drinking. Boredom may also play a role in spurring teenagers to consume alcohol (41). Out of a need for excitement, teenagers may feel compelled to drink. In addition, the complexities of school, work, parents, and a social life may leave teenagers feeling extremely stressed. As a result, teenagers may believe that drinking is one avenue in which to relieve themselves of that stress (41). Common problems that everyone experiences, like boredom and stress, may give way to drinking.
Along with the causes for teenage drinking, there are many effects.
