Gun Control: Do We Need an Armed Citizenry?

 

            America's gun control needs serious revision in order to keep weapons out of high-risk hands. Kids with guns, school shootings, and other accidental deaths are the direct result of poor gun control. But it's not just up to the U.S. Government to control weapons; it's up to parents too, to keep their weapons out of the hands of their children. .
             The Second Amendment states, "The right to bear arms." It contains no qualifiers, no "buts," or "exceptions." (Sidlow, Edward and Henschen, Beth. "America at Odds: Third Edition"). So, is there a need to change the constitution? In order to keep guns and other weapons out of the hands of children and teenagers, there should be some "buts" and "exceptions" added to the Second Amendment. .
             However, as it stands, the amendment makes it easy for qualified and responsible citizens who actually need and use their guns to obtain their weapons. Criminals and other irresponsible people are able to take advantage of the laws and get weapons just as easily.
             Once a gun or other weapon is in the hands of a criminal or an unqualified person, the licensing and registration system makes it easy for them to keep the ownership of the weapon a secret. Also, it may not have an effect on crime anyway, criminals don't obey laws after all.
             Ninety-nine percent of all privately owned hand guns in the United States aren't used for criminal purposes, they are used for protection and security. However, Americans do not need a semi-automatic weapon for protection. According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), a hand gun at home is an insurance policy.              The United States has the highest murder rate in the developed world, (Sidlow, Edward and Henschen, Beth. "America at Odds: Third Edition"). Is this result of having the most heavily armed population in the world? Do criminals have that large of an amount of fire power? .
