Courage

To me courage is something we all have inside of ourselves. Sometimes it just takes something drastic to reach deep inside of ourselves and release it. In a quote by Ernest Hemingway he states that, "Courage is grace under pressure." To me this quote means that courage is the ability to act instinctively and help while remaining calm. I agree because true courage is part of our personality. It's not something that can be bought. It's an element that makes up an individuals internal matter. .
During September 11th the whole nation witnessed a level of courage that can never be forgotten. As the crowds of people ran down the New York Street in the direction furthest away from the burning New York trade centers, you could make out people running towards the fiery scene. Who were these courageous heroes? They were the New York fire and Police departments. During this chaotic mess of falling debris, clouds of smoke, and running people they still did their jobs to their best capacity. They ran into the smoke filled trade centers and managed to carry and rescue people from some of the top floors. .
They kept calm and tried to persuade people that everything would be fine. They put their lives on the line without even thinking about it. They put others before themselves. To me this is the greatest courage of all. They had a great amount of pressure resting on their shoulders. They had the pressure of their families to make it home that night, they had the pressure of the trapped workers who hoped desperately to be saved, and they also had the pressure of their consciences who wanted to save others and save themselves at the same time. .
To recapitulate courage is an important quality to obtain. The heroes of our nation are extremely strong and devout people. They didn't back down in the face of danger which shows that they have a great amount of courage. . Everyone has an underlying layer of courage.
