I have composed this letter concerning rather or not the poem "Courage" by Anne Sexton should be in the grade level curriculum. I feel that this poem should be in the curriculum for several reasons. One being how it makes a student think "below the surface." Also another reason is that it fit the California standards. But the main focus is that it can relate to life.
The reason why I say that it makes a student think below the surface level is that in this poem talks about courage in general, but it talks about it in so many ways. To really understand it you have to think what is important about how it is showing courage. Like for example in in line 2 and 3 when it talking about a child first step it is showing that is takes courage for a baby to take their first step and it is very moving as an earthquake. Also another example on how it makes a student think below the surface level in lines 20 -27 what courage is found in that. In those line it is show that having compassion is also a sign of courage.
"Courage" also fits in the California Standards under "understanding grade level reading material." The reason I say that is in high school student should be able to understand. I am going to say that this poem may be confusing at first but taking that time student are capable to analyze this poem and able to understanding it. .
But the main reason that I feel this poem should be in the curriculum is it can relate to a person life. If you notice this poem goes is chronological order as how life is. In this poem it is first talking about a baby taking it first step. Then it goes on talking about compassion. Then at the end it is talking about waling away and death. So in many ways this poem courage can relate to life in general and it is show that what you do in life takes some kind of courage.
So once more this is how I feel about this poem and rather or not it should be in the grade level curriculum.
