Education Today

Education in today's society is viewed as an individual's key to success. This is a difficult key to obtain when the means of reaching free education are not fair. Not every student in the Washoe County School District is given a fair chance to learn. Some students are held back by less challenging programs for the "benefit" of those who are not up to the same challenge. A high school student named Matt McKnight is the student body president of his school. Matt also plays football, runs track & field, writes for the yearbook and newspaper, and performs in three plays a year at Hug High School. Matt is a part of many community orginizations such as Reno Little Theatre, United Blood Services, and Academic Olympics. All while maintaining a 4.0 G.P.A, with Honors. He is a college bound student with big goals in mind. How well will he do at College? Will he do as well as Galena's "top of the class" student? Matt's education has not been supplied like Galena's student might have been. Matt is not offered as many challenging courses that would have better prepared him for college as that of the Galena student. Although, Matt certainly has the potential. What is a solution to this? Better yet, what is the cause of this?.
An article from The Reno Gazette Journal printed a piece about McQueen High School's tennis courts. The tennis courts had a crack that would cost an estimated $200,000 to fix. The repairs were listed at the time of the printing of this article as waiting on a "school bond." As a graduate from Hug High School, I can tell you that Hug was and is still in need of graver and more important repairs than tennis courts. Some of these repairs include lockers for students, broken air conditioning and heating units, classrooms without white boards, and more books for student learning. Repairs such as these, as well as other repairs through out the school district would better the quality of education for each and every student.
