Breast augmentation

Nancy was having second thoughts about attending the beach party with her friends as she slipped into her bathing suit that bright and sunny morning. She did not feel confident about the way she looked and felt about her body. After so much frustration and wishful thinking she felt that her breast size was not flattering to the rest of her full-figured body. Nancy sat down one day and started to research breast augmentation. She looked into different plastic surgeons and narrowed her choice down to three of whom she would meet with. She then picked up the phone to schedule her first consultation. These days we often here of situations like these where women are not satisfied with the size or shape breasts and wish to change it. Breast augmentation can best be defined as a means of ," enhancing the size and shape of a woman's breasts for the purpose of enlarging breast size balancing out uneven breast sizes, or correcting breast reduction after significant weight loss or pregnancy" (Breast Augmentation Resource, 2002). Although many women are scared to have a surgical procedure performed on their body, breast augmentation has become one of the most popular plastic surgeries chosen among women. Studies today have shown that in the year 2000 ," over 200,000 U.S. women had a breast augmentation for purely cosmetic purposes" (Breast Augmentation Resource, 2002). The different ways of plastic surgeons performing a breast augmentation have changed drastically since the first surgical one was tested in 1890. History shows that the breast was injected with paraffin," a waxy substance used especially for making candles and sealing foods"(Merriam Webster, 1989) and resulted in ," infections, hardening of the breasts, and lump formations in the breast"(Breast Augmentation Resource, 2002). The evolution of breast augmentation has ranged from silicone shots, fat transplants, polyvinyl sponges, silicone breast implants, and the now highly recommended saline breast implants.
