The Dangers of Breast Implants

            Why do women get breast implants? Do breast implants make them feel good about themselves? Breast implants can be a serious threat because, there many health risk involved. Images portrayed by the media will make people do almost anything to fit American standards of the perfect body. Plastic surgery offers a quick fix to help achieve this goal. When one chooses to get breast implants they have to consider more than the cosmetics. They have to take into consideration; the different types of breast implants, the many costs, the actual procedure and the health risks size effects that may occur. Breast implants are one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery in North America. The desire for bigger breast is only one side of the story. There is another side of this story that doesn't get the attention it deserves. These are the stories of thousands of women who have suffered tremendously after having breast implants. Stories such as: one woman had to have both implants rupture and had to go through a painful surgery to have the implants removed and to have the silicone scrapped off her ribs and tissues. This woman still suffers from chronic joint pain and headaches. Another woman also had her implants rupture but could not have them removed because there was too much debris blocking one heart chamber. She still has difficulty breathing and will be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of her life. (Stewart, 1998:13-15 Silicone Spills: Breast Implants on Trail).
             There are many reasons why women decide to get breast implants. Many times they have a desire to regain some of the youthfulness that they had before child bearing years. It is only natural to want the allure of their youth that is a part of their femininity and sexuality. Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy helps to restore a women's sense of femininity. However, the attention given to breast implants and their relative safety is a sham perpetuated by the billion dollar companies that manufacture these lethal bags and the plastic surgeons that put them in.
