             In Utah history the black hawk war is known for being the longest and most .
             Destructive conflicts between pioneers and Native Americans. The Pioneers came to live.
             on the Indians land, I think the Indians were treated unfairly. .

             For a long time the Indians and white men were having problems. On April 9th .
             1865 it is said the violence started. The problem was about white men getting .
             angry about some Indians stealing their cattle and eating it. The Indians were .
             starving and needed the meat. One white man yanked a young Indian chieftain, Black.
             Hawk, of his horse. This was a great insult to the Indians. Black Hawk said he would get .
             revenge. He did. Over the next few days the Indians stole hundreds of cattle and killed .
             5 Mormons. I think the Indians should not had killed any one or stolen their cattle. But.

             the pioneers called the cattle their own when it used to roam free and the Indians would .
             use it only when they needed to eat. I think the Indians were treated meanly.
             Black Hawk and his men kept stealing more than 2,000 cattle and killing around .
             25 more white people that year and more the next.
             The pioneers built forts to be protected. The Mormon militiamen chased Black .
             Hawk and his men but didn't get them. The white men couldn't tell the difference .
             between friendly and unfriendly Indians, so they killed any kind of Indian.
             I thought that it was so unfair that the white men killed innocent Indians.
             In 1867 Black Hawk wanted to make peace with the pioneers. He went to .
             Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, who gave him a paper promising that no one would .
             shoot him. Black Hawk dept the letter in his chest pocket and said if any one wanted to.
             shoot him they would have to shoot though Brigham Young's promise.
             Brigham Young tried to help Black Hawk's people to get them to a reservation, .
             but that was not successful.
             Years later in 1872 the federal troops finally were ordered to engage the Indians, .
             the war ended.
