He was not a personable guy and spent most if not all of his time in seclusion from students. His class was not enjoyable to anybody.
During Thanksgiving time there is a special school event called the Turkey Bowl. Teams from the seventh and eighth grades face off in a winner take all two-hand touch football game. This is a very big event on campus, and the winners get to brag the rest of the year. More times than not, the eighth grade wins easily, but not my eighth grade year. The game was close from starting to finish. With a few seconds left the eighth grade team scored to win the game. We were all relieved, and so began the bragging. It was a game to be remembered for a while.
Another big school event is the faculty versus students softball game. I was a player on the students" team, which was made up of all eighth graders. A student team had not won this game in over 15 years, but that year would be different. My team did not score until the third inning, but after that we piled on over twenty runs to topple the powerful faculty team. Because this was a big thing, there was a giant celebration. The team and I were treated like celebrities for a few days. This is one of my fondest memories of eighth grade.
The biggest of all school events is the Basketball Carnival, held at the Glendale High School gym. Parents, teachers, students and sibling all attend this grand event. The carnival includes a seventh versus eighth grade girls and boys basketball game as well as a student all-star team versus faculty game. The game is hyped for weeks, with rallies and flyers. Of course the two student only games are fun to watch, especially with a few friends participating, but the faculty versus students game is the most fun. Like the softball game, the faculty wins almost all the time. This year was no different, with the students losing by more than fifteen points. It was a sad day to be a student, but we survived.
