             (5-10) INTRODUCTION.
(Presentational Aid #1: Picture of two little girls) Take a look at this picture of these two little girls. You wouldn't know it but, one of these children is emotionally neglected. Believe it or not there are ways to tell. Child A, is happy and loves herself, but child B seems happy and actually has a very low self esteem that could affect her for the rest of her life, she also might not have any friends. You could actually prevent this child's illness. (presentational aid#2: bar graph) (5)Each year in the United States there are over 3,000,000 cases of child abuse, only 1/3 are confirmed child abuse or neglect. Each year 1,200 children die due to child abuse and neglect. Of these children eighty percent are under the age of five. Family members cause 90 percent of child abuse or neglect (6) If you have children now or plan to have children in the future then you can see how this is a problem that needs to be fixed. Just the thought of someone abusing your child must at least anger or even sadden you. (7) So if you see someone you love being abused or neglected then speak up and call 1-800-4-A-CHILD. (8) Many of you may not know what child neglect is, the legal definition is, usually arises from a parent's passive indifference to a child's well being, such as failing to feed a child or leaving a child alone for an extended period of time. This law is so indirect that it's harder to convict someone of child abuse or neglect until a person has actually caused harm to the child. (9-10) I hope this speech teaches you that there is something that you as individuals can do to help prevent child abuse or even help out abused children.
