John Conlee: Early years.
- Conlee was born and raised on a tobacco farm in Versailles, Kentucky I 1946. He began to play guitar as a child, and by age 10 was playing on the local radio station. He moved to Nashville in 1971 as a folk singer and later was signed by ABC Records. During this time, John released a couple of singles but failed to make a name for him.

The band Alabama was formed in 1969 at Fort Payne, Alabama. At that time, the band was known as "Wild Country". First cousins, Randy Owens and Teddy Gentry made up the core of the band.
