Tom Robinson

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson represents the black race in Maycomb's society. He is a victim of racism and is characterized by what the people of Maycomb say about him. After being accused of rape, most of the people see him as an evil beast. However, Tom Robinson should not be found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell. Although Tom is a black man, you should not judge this trial by racial content. Atticus provides clear evidence that Mayella and her father Bob are lying about Tom. First, Tom is honest and a good man, no doctor was called to the scene, Mayella was upset easily and can b proven a liar, and Tom has no use of his left arm. The evidence supporting Tom clearly shows his innocence.
Tom is an honest and good man. When Tom is giving his statement he says, "I felt right sorry for her- (200). In Maycomb, whites were extremely higher in class than blacks, so for a black to say that he feels sorry for a white person was startling. But looking at what Tom says we know how he really feels. We know that Tom is not trying to trick the jury into thinking he was innocent or he wouldn't have said this. We also know that Tom is a good man because he doesn't want to embarrass Mayella. He is careful on what he says and says things respectfully. He doesn't want to admit that Mayella came on to him, for the sake of her. Another piece of evidence to look at is Mr. Link Deas. Mr. Deas stands up in the courtroom to defend Tom's name. "I want the whole of you to know one thing, right now. That boys' worked for me for eight years and I ain't had a speck of trouble out of him, not a speck" (198). We know that in Maycomb a white man would not do this for a black man at all. We know that Tom must be a respectfully good and truthful man. These pieces of evidence help to show Tom's innocence. .
Another thing to help prove Tom's innocence is that no doctor was called to the scene of the rape.
