During the rest of the week McMurphy continues to act as a clown and often causes trouble to irritate the Big Nurse who does a good job to control herself. Toward the end of the week during a meeting a vote was proposed by McMurphy to change the TV schedule so the crazy people can watch the World Series. The vote was 20 for and 20 against, so the Big Nurse denied the vote which made McMurphy furious. He responded by sitting in front of the TV and announcing the game to a blank screen instead of doing his daily assigned chores. All the patients on the floor then joined into the game and started cheering and yelling. This behavior was too much for the Big Nurse to handle. She started to yell at all of the patients and McMurphy won the bet. This trick established McMurphy as a leader. .
He won more than 5 dollars he won the respect and loyalty of the patients. To try to regain control of the ward the Big Nurse thought of transferring McMurphy to a different floor after the TV scene incident, but she knew that is what McMurphy wanted. She kept McMurphy on her floor to play the game with him. McMurphy continues his clowning until he finds out one day that jail and the institute are different. In jail you have a set free date, but in the institute if you keep acting up your time is extended. When McMurphy found this out he began to behave properly in order that his time in the ward would not be extended any longer. .
The good behavior continued until one day McMurphy couldn't handle himself any longer. As a result of gambling for cigarets the Big Nurse took all the cigarets and put them in her office. Her office has a huge glass window to observe the patients. The Big Nurse took great pride in keeping it spotless.
