Automobile safety is a big social issue of our time. This paper will discuss modern car safety devices. It will also explain when they were introduced and how successful they have been. Car safety affects everybody in our population, even those who do not drive. Often these devices have high costs, but they are worth it because they improve safety of the driver and passengers. Sometimes safety devices fail and can cause serious injuries or even a death. This paper will emphasize that the driver is still needed because no device can do everything for you. And responsibility of driver is one of the keys for being safe, because for example every 3 out of every 5 people killed in vehicle accidents in U.S. would have survived their injuries if they had been strapped in. ("Death-defying designs for car safety", 3) Modern car safety devices can improve our safety of driving.
Volvo is the car manufacturer that has been always mostly concerned about the safety of cars. They were first to invent many safety technologies that are still used in our cars. Volvo first invented 2-point seatbelts to protect the driver and his passengers, and later introduced 3-point seatbelts, that we are using every day, and made them standard in every car. ("A Potted Seat Belt History", 1) .
And now, "seatbelts save 13,000 lives in the United States each year" ("How Seatbelts Work", 1). .
The basic idea of a seatbelt is very simple: It keeps you from flying through the windshield or hurdling toward the dashboard when your car comes to an abrupt stop. But why would this happen in the first place? In short, because of inertia.
