" Goldberg summarizes this survey by saying, "In the world of media elites, Democrats outnumber Republicans by twelve to one, and liberals outnumber conservatives by seven to one.".
As Goldberg states, this was not the first poll to portray a liberal bias in the media. Going back to a poll in 1972, it showed 70% of the reporters voted for McGovern, who Goldberg calls "The most Liberal presidential nominee in recent memory."" In 1985, three thousand journalists were surveyed across the country. The percentages and figures from this poll also illustrated an extreme bias in the media that made a strong case for the conservatives. And recently in 2000 there was a poll conducted that also backed up conservative arguments. Those 3,400 journalists polled were less likely to get married and have a family, less likely to be religious, and less likely than non journalists to participate in community service, all of which are typical traits found in journalists. .
Dan Rather, who is a respected and popular journalist, has said some things in the past that have been held as liberal remarks. He has been used as an example of liberal journalism since his start with CBS Evening News in 1981(Media Research Center). Here are a few or his more biased statements.
"Senior Americans who saw retirement savings evaporate in the Wall Street meltdown have another financial headache now. It turns out it was all talk and no action with the President and Congress again today on passing any version of Medicare prescription drug coverage."".
" CBS Evening News, July 23, 2002.
"This was President Bush's first day at the office and he did something to quickly please the right flank in his party: He re-instituted an anti-abortion policy that had been in place during his father's term and the Reagan presidency but was lifted during the Clinton years.".
