Baroque Architecture

 

            In Baroque architecture the plan form alone is of little use as a method of communicating one's real experience of the architectonic space, for it gives no indication of the unique spaces created by the complex composition of geometrical forms, which in plan, overlay and merge in unprecedented size and complexity. Nor does it create a clear boundary between interior and exterior space, since ceilings and roofs, which are as important in defining architectonic space as walls, are not indicated on the plan drawings. Neither can Baroque's' unity of the arts in there technical brilliance of harmony wherein painting, sculpture and architecture are combined to engage the viewer, both physically and emotionally, be shown simply in plan form. Vision and Movement are created in new spatial relationships, producing an effect both real and illusionary, often with spectacular visual effects. To truly experience the spaces created, It is necessary to physically move through the building in time, for only then will individual perceptions be played on, person experiencing an original narrative as they move through the building. .
             In this essay I will put forth an argument to prove that in Baroque architecture the plan alone can not give one a complete understanding of spaces within buildings. Firstly by introducing the baroque as a cultural movement, in its strong connection to the reformation of the church and as a means of propagating faith in the state._____________________________________________? .
             To introduce it, we will describe the Baroque style, the importance of the mathematics in the Baroque architecture, and the characteristics of the Borromini;s church named san Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1638-1641, Rome).
             I will then use general Baroque style, backed up by some well known documentation to prove my argument. Following this, I will intricately explore/investigate all the relevant details of Borromini's "San Carlo alle Quattro" , a famous church from the period, from it's facade, to is plan forms, right up to it's dome roof and intricate painting and sculpture.
