It was created to use reverse discrimination to solve the problem of discrimination. In that, minority groups are being chosen over the qualification of other workers. This creates a mainstream of problems.
Some find it very unfair and some find it very helpful using these practices. The people that are for affirmative action are usually in a situation where they are benefited from it. Based on the general public as to why they acknowledge affirmative action is usually based on the fact that it establishes a situation where equal opportunity is distributed among minorities for jobs. Prior to affirmative action - city, state and government jobs were almost completely closed off to minorities and women (www.dol.gov). In present day, minorities and women have gained an increase of applicants of jobs in those workplaces. Unlike the days before affirmative action where jobs where mainly given to Americans, now jobs are being given to women and minorities under the quota system. Suppose that an American and a minority applied for a job and the American is more qualified. In most cases, the American should be hired for the job. Due to the quota system, the company, in order to meet that quota, must hire the minority. Which is for the better because in that sense, we are doing better in racial inequality in America's workplace. Affirmative action benefits society as a whole. Having a truly democratic and just society demands it, because racism, sexism and other discriminations tear at the weakness of our society. .
Affirmative action is also very influential in the education system. "Equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity programs have been indispensable both to our educational mission and to our ability to achieve a diversified community of learning (www.now.org). Minority students who have never been accepted into a decent school are now being accepted. They are given the chance to prove themselves with the help of affirmative action.
