Legalizing Gay Marriages

Some will say that not legalizing same-sex marriages is against a person's constitutional right of freedom, others say that it goes against the laws of nature and would be "antifamily." Proposed legalization of same-sex marriages is one of the most significant debates in America. If same-sex marriages are legalized it could be a major political reform, not only for America, but for several other countries as well. Thomas B. Stoddard's "Gay Marriages: Make Them Legal," has some good arguments against people's and the government's rulings and outlooks on same-sex marriages. .
One of Stoddard's main arguments is the Supreme Court declared in 1967, " marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man" (and, presumably, of woman as well). The freedom to marry, said the court, is "essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness." This proves that the Supreme Court is hypocritical to gay marriages. If the government can say that marriage is a basic civil liberty and it is essential for happiness then why is it not legal to marry whom someone chooses? .
Stoddard points out, in his essay, a case of two homosexual women married in almost every aspect except the legal one. One woman was critically injured and needed around the clock care. The other women fought in court to be her sole caretaker, but lost because the family did not want her to be the legal guardian of their daughter. Although they lived basically a married life together, the court and the family denied the petition and caused the two homosexual women injustice and anguish. The courts ruling would have been very different, if the couple consisted of a male and a female. .
Not allowing same-sex marriages is a discrimination against homosexuals. America is supposed to forbid discrimination, therefore America is contradicting itself by saying it is okay for marriages to be interracial but not inter-sexual. "The decision whether or not to marry belongs properly to individuals-not the government," states Stoddard.
