This led to England's support on two occasions", attempts to break apart the newly formed nation. There are two instances that occur almost 50 years apart that demonstrate this clearly. Well after the establishment of the United States a feeling of disgust towards this rebellious daughter nation still held true after such a an extended period of time. The war of 1812 was a depiction of English relentless cling to the land that it had lost. The United States Civil War of 1861-65 was also an instance of which Britain openly sided with the enemies of the union, the Confederacy. If, in fact, the southern states actually had won the war, Britain would have been one of their two staunch allies, simply for the reason the US was once a colony of hers. Of course, one must also take into consideration the fact that the institution that the US in fact had had a civil war in the first place was slavery. Britain was totally against any such institution, thus depicting once again the animosity felt between the British Parliament and the United States. .
The feeling of respite which England held towards the US did not last forever however, as the US would soon rise to a place of glory taking her seat in the annals of history alongside world powers such as England before her, the Roman Empire, the Grecian Empire of old whom the US borrowed her form government. .
The Spanish American war opened the door for the US to rise to power globally and thus become a force to be reckoned with herself. England saw this as an opportunity to coattail a riding power as well as becoming more recently the best friend the US has today. .
Prior to the start of the Great War, the United States and Great Britain had relatively small, if any, relations with each other, having been at odds for such a long period. The First World War actually began friendly British/American relations similar to that of today. With a sinister feeling that the US should remain neutral throughout the War, Americans were very much against President Wilson's announcement that the US was to mobilize for conflict in late 1916.
