Amulets would be made of the comfort women's pubic hair or form something belonging to them in order to bring good luck. Sexual deprivation was believed to make a soldier accident-prone. Sex also acted to relieve stress during battle. In this book entitled: The Emperor's Forces and Korean Comfort Women Japanese private Kim Il Myon states: .
"To soldiers in the frontline, ever surrounding by the sound of guns, wrapped in smoke stinking of death and not knowing when death would come a visit to a comfort station was no doubt the only kind of individual act in which one was liberated the comfort stations of the unit was their oasis." (The Comfort Women, Hicks p. 92) .
In one case a man who had never visited a comfort station was forcibly taken while his fellow comrades watched through a peephole as the women were chasing him around the room. In War Ministry circular the Japanese rationale for this is expressed: .
"It is not necessary to emphasize how much the environment influences troops" psychology and therefore the promotion of discipline. Thus care must be taken in regard to suitable living conditions and comfort facilities the psychological influence received from sexual comfort stations is most direct and profound and must be realized how greatly their appropriate direction and supervision affect the raising of morale- (The Comfort Women, Hicks p.101) .
These and are the reasons the Japanese consider these women Patriots. Being able to service the soldiers in such a way should have been an honor, and the women should have thought of themselves as privileged. But this pretty picture that the Japanese painted was not what really happened. .
The first comfort stations directly under Japanese control were in Tokyo in 1932. One of the commanders involved in this campaign Lieutenant-General Okamura Yasuji confessed that he was one of the founders of the comfort stations for the army.
