Technology in Dystopia

Joe's return to this state and his smile shows how dependent he has become on technology. It is this dependence on technology that leads to dystopia without mankind realizing it.
Milo Minderbinder is representative of corporate business. His goal in the war is not to win it but to earn profit in order to expand his fleet of technology. His pursuit of profit ends up adding to the dystopia of the squadron. Milo lands a "contract with the Germans, .to bomb his own outfit. Milo's planes separated in a well-coordinated attack and bombed the fuel-stocks.and the B-25 bombers"(Heller, 252). This bombing of the squadron is symbolic of how large corporate businesses rely on technology to function and then use it to keep down and destroy the "little guy". .
But the character that shows technology leading to dystopia is Colonel Cathcart. Were it not for technology, Cathcart would have no way to glorify himself and get himself promoted. Cathcart's volunteering of the battle group for the most dangerous missions and the constant raising of the number of missions is for the benefit of his own ego, not for his country. His ambition to be promoted to general blinds him to the fact that the men are going insane, are distraught and dishearten. Battlefield technology has caused this low morale in the men and it becomes worse as the more missions they are forced to fly. So technology has effectively created a dystopia without Cathcart realizing it. The men become so tired of living in dystopia they see their only option is to murder Colonel Cathcart. By murdering Cathcart, they believe the main cause of their troubles will be gone and all will be happy and their society will be a grand one. Despite Cathcart allowing the dystopia to evolve, the society will always be harsh since technology has caused the dystopia. Although characters are a good way to show how a dystopia is created, symbolism can be just as powerful as the characters.
