Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

I agree with Dave Barry's point of view. I have seen in myself how much advertising affects my image. I tend to wear clothes I see skinny and beautiful women wearing thinking that maybe I can look that way. If I feel that a model is not pretty or skinny, I tend to look down upon her which is reflected in my choice of the product she is advertising. One more issue I agree with Dave Barry is on the Barbie doll image. If I were to go back in time and compare my sister, Rachel's and my cousin, Katie's toys, I would see an astonishing difference. My sister played with Barbie dolls more than my cousin did. Now my sister wears all the name brand clothes and is thin. However, my cousin doesn't wear what everyone else is wearing and is heavier than my sister. Could their childhood toys explain these differences? Another example of Dave Barry's point of view is my brother. While I played with Barbie dolls, my brother played with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The first major difference is that toys for young boys tend to be monsters or odd freaks of nature, on the contrary, girls" toys tend to be beautiful, skinny and for the most part look human. Then there is the influence of celebrities. Women tend to be effected by celebrities when they are selling something or even in a commercial. My sister and I only buy name brand shoes because of this. Since we were little we saw all the athletes wearing nike shoes. We felt that if we were the same shoes as the celebrity that maybe we could be super athletes like them. On the other hand, my brother watched the same commercials we did, but he doesn't have the same feeling as my sister and me. He doesn't care what brand his shoes are. He cares about comfort. This could lead to a statement to say that some men don't care as much about their looks as some women do. These obvious and remarkable examples help demonstrate why too many women feel that they are ugly no matter what they do.
