"it is never right to willingly do harm to oneself or to another, it is wrong to break your agreements and that the city is like a parent or teacher to all it's citizens and that it should be respected and obeyed." (Wordbook Online) Socrates felt that the city he lived in and in the end turned against him must be honored and obeyed just as a parent or teacher should be obeyed. So when Crito his friend attempted to convince Socrates to escape Athens Socrates declined. He stated, "moral integrity is more precious that life itself."(Wordbook online) .
This is not the case in today's society. The students of today have the ambition of self-gratification and if there is anyone standing in their way, the student is willing to step up and over that person to accomplish or fulfill that need. The word or notion of morals no longer has the same definition as when Socrates lectured to the youth of Athens. Morals today seem to mean that if you want something, or choose to dress, speak and act in a way that offends everyone around you, either society joins them or society should just step aside and get out of their way. .
This perception of thinking and existing is portrayed on television, in music and in the media. However, the media is only attempting to report on the havoc. The ricocheted effect is that the youth is absorbing the negative lifestyles of the rappers and young actors that they see, it is the overall lifestyle they want to obtain.
I also believe that based on what Confucius believed we could find a hint of what has gone wrong in today's educational and residential life. Confucius believed," Things being investigated, knowledge became complete. Their knowledge being complete, their thoughts were sincere. Their thoughts being sincere, their hearts were then rectified. Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated, their families were regulated.
