Watson and Crick gathered there information from various sources and people. In a nucleic acid the three main ingredients are a five carbon sugar, a phosphate group and a organic nitrogen-containing base. (Watson, 1968) These were the five bases which are adenine and guanine which form a large double ring structure called cytosine.(Levine, 1997) Cytosine, thymine, and uracil are single ring structures called pyrimidine.(Watson, 1968) Later, they discovered that there was a problem with their data. They could not determine the band sequence between them. Mourice replied to Watson that the adenine bonds with thymine and guanine bonds with cytosine. After, the data was figured they made a hypothesis which is the second step in the scientific method. The hypothesis was that the bonds between the bases were A-T and C-G which were held by hydrogen bonds and the backbone of the molecules was inside. (Watson, 1968) Rosalind Franklin, disproved this observation, saying that "The water content was wrong. It was not four molecules per lattice, but eight per nucleotide."(Children of Prometheus) Franklin also went onto say "The structure had three chains coiled with the backbones inside, very tight in the bases pointing outwards."(Judson 1986). After this error result Watson and Crick began another experiment which revolved around the cut outs of the bases. In time, Watson determined that the base pairing remained the same, but sugar phosphate was to be dealt with first. .
Watson, a brilliant man lacked in the area of acceptance. The acceptance was having a women scientist. He did not despise women, because he was a bit of a womanizer, but simply believed woman belonged in other areas of society. (Gamov, 1975) Rosalind Franklin, was born in 1920 into a rich philanthropic, upper middle class Jewish family.(Judson, 1986) She did not receive the Nobel prize because of her early death; a debate which is still being held till this day.
