Platelets also assure that blood vessels stay leak proof in daily life. Platelets adhere to torn blood vessels to create a plug, slowing the loss of blood.
Plasma is 92% water, 7% protein, 1% minerals, plus vitamins, sugar, hormones, and enzymes. Plasma is the source of gamma globulin, serum albumin, fibrinogen and clotting factors. Factor VIII is the valuable clotting factor- a fraction of plasma - used to control bleeding in hemophiliacs. .
There are four blood types: A, B, AB and 0. Each blood type is either Rh positive or negative. In addition to numerous blood subtypes, many rare blood antigens can be found, especially among minorities, including U-negative, Duffy (a, b)-negative and Js (b)-negative. .
Blood Safety.
Blood centers follow five layers of safety procedure: blood donor eligibility standards, individual screening, laboratory testing, confidential exclusion of donations, and donor record checks. Twelve tests are performed on every unit of donated blood. Nine are for infectious diseases, including screenings for: hepatitis (a liver infection); HIV (the virus that causes AIDS); HTLV-I (a virus associated with a rare form of leukaemia) and HTLV-II; and syphilis. After all the testing is done, the blood is ready for donation. Before every donation the blood bank or the hospital issues the certificate of the blood safety. In the certificate the hospital gives the name of the donor, his date of birth and his full address, as well as the information about donating institution. After that come the place where blood is shipped to and the purpose of its shipment. Next to that, the number of packages and its weight. Then follow the results of the tests on infectious diseases and types and components of blood shipped. At the end it is specified how the blood should be handled and stored. .
Chart 1. This chart shows how order for blood is made and done by blood center.
Chart 2. As you can see the chart describes the conditions in which each blood component should be stored, the handling in the facility where blood-transfer is made and the information what to do, when there is blood left.
