When doing an assessment on the Kerr family it I imperative to look at the "bigger picture" rather than focusing on any one given member or issue. Although, through my choice of intervention, I have chosen primarily James to focus on, there are contributing parental and sibling factors within the whole scenario.
Areas in question regarding the Kerr family would be- the dynamics of the relationship between Mr&Mrs Kerr , the impact this ha on this children, what kind of parenting skills do they use i.e. authoritarian/laissez faire, and the consistency of this regarding all three siblings. Mrs. Kerr's level of functioning, medical ailments and the severity of the impact on her day-to-day life as a result of them, her being the main caregiver is also an area of concern.
In the form of a Task Centered approach - which I have chosen - the quality of the assessment and any work undertaken in conjunction with the family would be based on the quality of relationship I can establish and maintain with them. The format of this is a humanistic approach - anti oppressive - to achieve maximum results. The aim of such intervention is behaviour change and my focus would be on James, in the first instance, since hi overt behaviour is a major concern and at this moment in time the one causing most damage to, not only him directly, but the overspill of this into the family dynamics overall.
Primarily I would focus on establishing a positive relationship with James, which hopefully would enable positive engagement. My initial analysis would be based on the ABC of behaviour. The reasons for this being it are a simplistic plan (easy to understand) and self-directive in the questions it offers to enable problem solving. This format looks at .
             - ANTECENDANTS: what happens before the behaviour?.
             - BEHAVIOUR: what the person does?.
             - CONSEQUENCES: what happens after the behavior?.
Using such a framework would enable myself and James to look at his functioning within the school setting and identify triggers of behaviour.
