Changes in a Doll's House

There are many changes which would have to take place to make "A Doll's House" a modern, 21st century play.

             • The dialogue would have to be changed greatly. Even though it's not too long ago, dialogue changes with time. As you say to your friends, "that's old." Or, "that's the oldest trick in the book," when it comes to jokes, that takes place in regular every day dialogue as well. The dialogue would need to be changed in to how we speak today, including using any of our terms for words, and slang.

             • The status of the woman would need to be changed. Most likely, the woman could have a job, she could do more than just sit around the house and clean all of the time. The woman would also be able to do many other things, such as be able to take out the loan without having to do it secretly. It would be a very normal thing. A woman could perhaps be the head of a bank, if she wished. Just the general role of the woman in the household and in the community would need to be changed for this play to be successful as a 21st century play.

             • Yet another changed would be the clothing. As can be seen from pictures of the play, the clothing is very different from ours today. We wear more "comfortable" things, and we are much more casual. Where as, in "A Doll's House" the characters were almost always dressed up - the men in suit and the ladies in fancy dresses.

             • The ways in which society views things is much different. And, society itself is very different. Although people are shunned out of our modern day society, it doesn't happen as boldly. In "A Doll's House," such as when Krogstad is shunned out of society, it is announced rather publicly such as in newspaper and such. People as a whole just stop talking to him, even if they care about him. I know I can't say that this is truly changed now, however, in order to modernize "A Doll's House," some things such as the society in general, would have to be changed.
