Sticking to gender differences in chapter on Improving Interpersonal Relationships Alder and Rodman talk about Gender and Conflict Style. We all know that males and females handle problems and conflict totally different. Males are more likely to be more aggressive, demanding and competitive while females are more co-operative, less aggressive and will opt for a solution that involves talking. For this example I have some personal experience(s). There have been many times when someone or has something or done something to my girlfriend. Personally I don't like when someone disrespects her, let alone me. So, me, being the male that I am take the problem into my own hands. My girlfriend has tired to solve the problem by talking or walking away, but when someone says something that disrespects her I can't handle that. She may be able to, but I can't. She has tried to pull me away and just forget about, but I can't and I end up fighting and beating the guy up. That's just how males are. We, well I know I am and so are my buddies, don't like to talk about. If some guy or guys get stupid with us, we basically make them look stupid by beating them up. Yeah I know it doesn't solve anything by fighting but as a male, it gives me self-satisfaction and sticks up for my girlfriend. To males, talking doesn't nothing because it only results in someone becoming lippy and a "smart ass", which in the end, leads to a fight. My girlfriend has even gotten in a few scrums with other girls, but no fights. They just pull each other aside and talk about it. That's how girls are though and they probably will never change. But males are aggressive, macho, and like to show off so that's how and why they act accordingly. Another example of this difference has been when I've been to the mall with her. Some stores we go take forever to buy things because of the slow service or long line-up while others you are in and out.
