Tuesday's with Morrie

 

The students don't know that they are learning. He teaches the meaning of Life and how to be human, which is the theme in this story. The book is full of lessons. Morrie began the last class of his life with Mitch life's greatest lesson.
             The novel begins with a flashback of Mitch's graduation, where he discusses how close he was to Morrie and how he promised to keep in touch with Morrie. However, Mitch reveals that he does not keep in touch with Morrie. After graduation, Mitch's uncle, who was like a father figure for Mitch, dies of a cancer. This death of his uncle really affects him and Mitch turns to work and keeping himself busy. He gives up what he loves, music, to create a life. In other words, he turns to material things after that because he figure's life is going too fast and he needs to create a life. Meanwhile, Moorie finds out the he has a deadly decease. Mitch becomes consumed in his work as a sports columnist and does not visit his teacher until sixteen years later when he sees Morrie on aNightline? TV interviews with Ted Koppel. It is then that Mitch discovers Morrie's battle with ALS. For this reason, Mitch nervously visits his former teacher. Though Morrie has not seen Mitch for sixteen years, Morrie recognizes him immediately upon their reunion and gives Mitch a warm hug. Mitch is surprised with the affection he receives because he had expected that after sixteen years, his teacher would have forgotten him. From this moment, Mitch begins a new chapter of his life?he begins to learn how to live, not by work and money, but by love. He also learns how to forgive others and himself, sacrifice time to be with those he loves, and live life to its fullest by accepting death. As Morrie's disease progresses and makes Morrie more disabled and dependent on others, Morrie's mind and heart continue to grow. With his teacher's inspiration, Mitch writes his last thesis?a paper about the last class Morrie taught, which was held every Tuesday and with only one student, Mitch; his thesis was called Tuesdays with Morrie.
