             labor was not a product(that belonged to the owner); the return was a very low wage. It is estimated that even as the Economy grew, the relative wages of the workers did not. Labor .
             organizations did in fact come into picture and mind to many. There were now increasing reasons.
             for workers to join labor unions. Such labor unions were not notable successful in organizing .
             large numbers of workers in the late 19th century. Still, these unions were able to organize a vast .
             number of strikes. Even so, labor unions did not gain even close to equal footing with businesses .
             and industries until the economic chaos of the 1930's.
             The living conditions described in "The Jungle" were very similar to those I found in .
             my research. The noise, traffic jams, slums, air pollution, and sanitation and health problems were.
             all factors that Sinclair included in his book. As you may come to realize, the living conditions .
             were no better than the working conditions of this time. This industrial expansion and population.
             growth radically changed the face of the nation's cities. Many of those who resided in the cities .
             lived in rental apartments or tenement housing. Many of the immigrants coming to the country .
             were forced to find small housing for rent, and even small tenement housing. Housing was quite .
             expensive at the time, and many families decided to come together and split the payments on a .
             house. Though at these times, Corruption was among its highest. These families did not know .
             what they were getting themselves into. They would have to pay large amounts of interest, and .
             eventually this interest would catch up to them. And soon they would not be able to make the .
             payments on the rental house. They would soon be kicked out, and would lose all the money they .
             put into the house. These kinds of situations were very common during this part of the century for .
             many immigrants. Theses people faced food poisoning at many times, and the unhealthy sanitation.
