STRICTLY BALLROOM

.
A: I imagine Baz that our listeners are well aware that the Waltz is a traditional associated with dancing. The beginning of the film, surely creates this idea of a make believe experience, or "fairy tale" as you said it Baz. Thou once these red velvet stage curtains are opened, the pitch of colour is changed from this stunning bright red, to black and white of people creating a silhouette. Isn't the world of ballroom dancing supposed to be full of colour and glitter?.
B: The silhouette and slo-mo against a white background, is there it to emphasize the sense of waiting to see, who are going to be the dancers as the silhouette hides us from the characters. The black and white, becomes colour and beautiful, wonderful ballroom dancers are sprung into action in front of the screen. Our eyes become focused on how the ballroom dancers spin around. I really like they way I use the black and white to interpret blankness, then into this shower of colour to create this image of a perfect world. There is no, classic simple elegance shown. Each character on the floor is trying to be powerful and stand out above any other competitor there.
A: Colour seems as a very important film technique in Strictly Ballroom.
B: YES, YES COLOUR! With out colour the characters would not have become alive as they did in the film. The ballroom costumes characterize every couple by there signature colour. Liz, Scott's partner is yellow like a canary. Scott is seen wearing black cloths which symbolize his rebellious nature. At time Scott's use of the simple black pants a white shirt. Which symbolize the classic look of a traditional romantic hero? In the ending of the film Scott wears a gold jacket which represents the just of triumph and of courage over fear. Shirley Scotts mum wears pink clothes and her dressing room is also pink. The pink symbolize her with the superficiality of Shirley's obsession with ballroom dancing.
