AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Though affirmative action has good intentions it seems it now hurts more than the few it helps. Times have changed since affirmative action was put into place. What hasn't changed is affirmative action's policy to deal with minority groups. Because affirmative action never adapted to our changing culture we see more problems from its implementation than solutions.
Affirmative action was put into place in the 60's under President's Kennedy, and Johnson. They were looking to make up for all the wrongs the American government has done to minorities and to create an equal playing field for everyone. Affirmative action was the best solution our government could come up with for discrimination. For the past decades it has helped to promote equality in schools and in the workplace. We now live in a different era where affirmative action is no longer needed as it once was. We have even reached a point where affirmative action not only hurts majority groups but also minority groups.
One way affirmative action hurts minorities is it puts under qualified people in demanding positions. This leads to the reasons why minorities have such a high dropout rate in college and a reason why minorities have very slowly been able to advance to higher levels in the workplace. By putting someone in a position they are under qualified for they are not able to benefit from anything. Nor is anyone able to benefit from them. Instead they lose valuable time and money that could have been used on other resources. This also hurts the company who hires them because it brings down the most important asset, which is a person. Worst of all it works against the American dream of the hardest worker will receive the most success .
Another reason affirmative action puts minorities in bad positions is it creates a wall between co-workers and brings out discrimination. There is a general resentment created between minorities and co-workers because their rewards are the same yet they have accomplished much less.
