Some people claim that there is no such need for an reform in the educational system in America, proposing that the current curriculum is fine and producing fine leaders of the future. Former Senator Lessard denies any need of educational reform claiming that, "Education spending it at an all time high, and our test scores in our schools have never been higher" (Curriculum Reform, 33). Many politicians in the past have had the same lackadaisical attitude about education reform. Claiming the same thing over and over, "Education spending is at an all time high," (Curriculum Reform, 33) showing demographics appeasing the public with bar graphs and pie charts. .
Some believe that the state should intervene and reform in times of extreme need and do not believe that a reform is necessary given the present economic situation. When confronted, Americans are quick to point out that the nation's average for SAT's are on average 33 points higher than scores from 25 years ago. This all time high has eased the minds of many helping silence the need for educational reform in the United States. .
Education reform would take decades to create a healthy change, as well as millions of dollars. To do any significant change in our education system it would have to be a nation wide change, and standardized. In order for these changes to be mandated it would have to be a costly change, and would take decades for the mandated change to take affect. This reform to change the taught curriculums and provide higher funding for teachers would be irrefutably costly. Just to hire more teachers in public education would cost an estimated 5 billion (Curriculum Reform, 31). This is money that America doesn't have, especially in the current economic times we are incurring. More money is spent on national defense than on our public education currently, this says something about our culture and where we place emphasis.
