Minoan Religion

 

            
             Since archeology aimed at the Minoans has produced only ruins and remains of their culture people studying them can only guess at what there religious practices might have been. The most evident characteristic of the Minoans religion was that of a goddess religion. All gods were female, not a single male god in their religion has been identified. Many other religions were also thought to have started this way as well. Another characteristic of the Minoan religion was that of polytheism. Meaning they believed in many goddess", each having its own relevance in the Minoan culture. Some of the more common goddess" were the Huntress, the goddess of the mastered and overcame animals, and another and maybe the most popular goddess, the Snake Goddess. Many artifacts containing the figure of this goddess were found among the ruins of house, which pointed towards the assumption that she was a goddess of the house, or what is modernly called a guardian angel. There were also other house goddess, the other most popular of these took the shape of small birds. It is also believed that the Minoans gave religious meaning to all objects. They particularly worshiped trees, stones, and springs. The Minoan religion also consisted of demons, these came in the form of humans with the hands and feet of a lion, or sometimes the head of an animal. One of the most interesting archeological findings in the Minoan culture was the discovery that the Minoans buried their dead in pottery jars. Which indirectly may have led to what is current day cremation. .
