Sky Over Dimas

 

In this small island in Visayas, whose existence and identity depends largely on sugar, people knew everyone else and all of the land was already spoken for. Within the boundaries of this land, a tightly knit community of hacienderos and obreros lives. This arrangement between the rich landowners and the laborers is ample proof of the feudal system that exists in their society.
             B. Characters.
             i. George - He is a resident of Bacolod, 46 years old, and sole heir of Raul Torrecarion and Teresa Severino. He has acquired the reputation of Black Sheep in his family due to his renowned accident years ago. He lives as a dilettante, investing and experimenting on business ventures that are destined to fail in the old-fashioned community of Bacolod. Furthermore, he has a weakness for women and an inclination for unusual hobbies and interests. Recently, he has been labeled as a madman as a result of his eccentricity and disturbing behavior. .
             ii. Margie - She is George's equally batty wife and the mother of Rodel and Rafael. She has a tendency to do strange and disturbing things when one of her emotional spells is upon her. The ghosts and memories of persons long past dead frequently haunt her and only the occasional doses of lithium keeps her intact. She has the capacity for disaffection, which is necessary for the survival of her sanity. Moreover, she clings to faith and the mysteries of God like a drowning man clinging to a piece of wood.
             iii. Rodel - He is the son of Rodel and Margie. He has a growing interest in agriculture and later on handles the responsibility of the Torrecarion and Jarabas mansion. It is said that he will be the one to pull the Torrecarions from the cliff that the family had fallen over.
             iv. Rafael - He is the only son of George and the youngest of Margie. He is determined to shun his past by moving to Manila to study and stay for good. He maintains a calm indifference when told about the antics of his parents but deep inside, he cringe to know that his parents are doing it again.
