Female Executives

 

            Companies have recognized that female executives offer a wealth of talent. But recruiters and potential employers sometimes expect more from them than from their male counterparts. They look for several "superwoman" qualifications that business mythology ascribes to women as a class. These can include a win-win management style, out-of-the-box thinking, work-life balance and charisma.
             Twenty years ago, women were dismissed as indecisive, weak-willed managers with little clout and follow through. Today, the "female management style" is viewed as a significant positive. According to Sally Helgesen, author of "Female Advantage: Women's Ways of Leadership" (Currency/Doubleday, 1995), it's because women often view themselves at the center of things, place a high priority on workplace relationships and share information with comfort. In contrast, men tend to view themselves "on top," spare little time for subordinates and peers and tend to hoard information. Influenced by this research, many companies -- especially those experiencing rapid growth, turnarounds or other disruptions -- seek female executives, expecting they'll build "webs of inclusion" and transform the company into a nonhierarchical, communications-oriented organization.
