John Wooden

John learned how to be gentle by watching his father. John worked in the fields with his father; they had two mules named Jack and Kate. John would beat the mules and try to get them to work faster. The mules didn't work under these conditions. After watching John do this for a while, Joshua Wooden walked towards the mules and told them to get up, and without any physical punishment they started to work again. This stuck with John all through his life. He believes that physical and mental punishment is not needed to motivate people to work harder. John learned to work hard by watching his mother. She did the washing, scrubbing, ironing, cooking, mending, and canning with no electricity while helping with the farming. Joshua Wooden had what he called his "two sets of threes."" The first set was about honesty: Never lie, cheat, or steal. The second set was adversity: Don't whine, complain or make excuses. John Wooden's parents are great examples of role models. It all starts at home, the parents must guide their youngsters thinking, show them there is more to life than sports, and show them how to treat and respect others. Growing up with such committed parents, maybe that's the reason John Wooden stresses that parents have to be good role models for their kids.
Success, Achievement, and Competition are all key words that describe Coach Wooden. Success is truly found in how well you prepare yourself. Coach Wooden believed that if you prepare to the best of your ability, whether you won or lost you are still a success. He feels you can only be in control of yourself, not what others do. Basically he is saying, work hard and don't let what others do affect you. Wooden didn't judge his success on victory or defeat. Instead he based it on how well he prepared his team and himself. Wooden coached at UCLA for over 27 years, the first 14 years in many people's eyes, he was unsuccessful because he didn't win a championship.
