Deadly Calm

The eerie scratching at the door came to an immediate halt as the slick spear pierced the battered door. A dark red stream of blood seeped through the spear's puncture and made its slow, agonising, descent down the front of the wooden panel. An indescribable feeling sent emotions flying through her head- fear, grief, guilt, and a sense of relief engulfed Rae's entire body. These emotions were emphasised by the fact that what had happened beyond that wooden door remained unknown to Rae. Had she finished him off? Or was the silence just a ploy of Huey's? Despite this obvious risk, the urge to find out the truth became too strong for Rae. She stumbled toward the door, being led by her trembling hand whilst the other maintained a firm grip on the gun.
As the door swung open, Rae's eyes scanned the room up and down in search of Huey, dead or alive. The feeling of uncertainty remained with Rae and the intensity of the moment increased, as he was nowhere to be seen. She closed the door gingerly behind her as she warily placed each step, one in front of the other. The only source of light in the room was coming from the small porthole above the top bunk. As Rae's eyes came into focus in the dimly lit room, her attention was brought to the small patch of light aimed at a loose bed sheet scraping the floor. .
At that moment, Huey appeared from behind the concealing sheet, pinning Rae against the opposite wall. His strong and menacing hands reached for her throat and began to squeeze the life from within her. Rae helplessly struggled and gasped for air with little hope. His hands proved too strong for her petite frame and it was only a matter of time before Rae's luck would run out. Although only seconds had passed, to Rae it seemed as time had stopped. As Huey's attack continued, his grip began to loosen. His eyes screamed with confusion and what seemed to be almost fear. Sensing an opportunity, Rae whipped her head around in order to gain her breath.
