I believe that eventually a greater influence will be needed in this area of the world. If Plan Colombia does not succeed, then the United States may need to involve its Armed Forces. After already investing so much in the country, I believe we will feel the need to back up our investment. Unfortunately, we will be facing a tough opponent in the rugged jungles of Colombia. Besides the cartels, we will need to fight off the leftist guerrillas, and also conquer the rightist paramillitaries also involved in the drug trade. The United States does not want to turn this into another Vietnam.
America also must be aware that as long as there is a demand for drugs in the homeland, the cartels will keep supplying them. With a tremendous amount of money to be made, do not be surprised if these operations are moved to a different country, such as Peru. We learned this after toppling the great Manuel Noriega in Panama in 1989.
Secondly, I believe we must talk with Mexico to prevent the tremendous amount of illegal immigrants from flowing into our country. Despite the words engraved on the Statue of Liberty, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." , we are no longer a country that needs a tremendous amount of immigrants to boost our industry. In fact, illegal immigrants actually are hurting our economy. The facts are that there are double the amount of illegal aliens in the U.S. since 1990. The terrorism plots and actions against the U.S. were carried out by illegal immigrants . More illegal immigrants enter this country every day in places where Americans live peacefully. They use private land for passage, leave behind trash, steal, destroy, and commit other crimes. The guest-worker programs have thus far been ineffective. The illegal immigrants will work for much less wages, and not only does this mean that the guest-workers are not really needed, but also American citizens are losing their jobs to these illegal immigrants.
