When he awakens he has many puny little legs and a "armor like back". I was most impressed with the fact that he was more worried about getting to work then him being worried about his appearance. It was not until one of his boss's assistant came to his house to see why he had not shown to work that I learned that his voice had also changed. Gregor was very persistent and was able to get himself up from bed, and out of his room. This was the first time that the family had seen him in this new shape. .
I believe that during the story every character has they"re own metamorphism. In the book the mother is well concerned about Gregor, which soon begins to change because of the new grotesque countenance of his son, which just makes her more ill every time she see's him. I believe that what makes her sick is that for so long he was taken for granted and now she is feeling extremely guilty. His sister Grete was the character that most surprised me in the story. She began as the character that showed the most concern about her brother. She brought him food everyday and was the one that noticed that he no longer had the same taste of food he had before. She analyzed her brother much deeper then anyone else in the story. This also surprised me because in the end she was the one that wanted to get rid of him the most. Now I leave the best for last, his father. I believe that the greatest change occurs here. Before the metamorphosis Gregor had taken the role of his father maintaining the family, giving them a home to live in and at the same time taking a load of his parents back. The change reoccurred when Gregor transformed and his father began to work again. I can tell this was an important role because throughout the story every time they describe the father he is always wearing his work clothes. Also the attitude and aggression that is brought upon Gregor is no affection that a father would give to his son, his father had once again retaken his role in the family.
