Cyrano de Bergerac

Cyrano de Bergerac was written by Edmond Rostand in 1897. The story is set in France from 1640 to 1655, when France was at war with Spain. Most of the story takes place in Paris. Rostand does a number of things from showing what love truly is, to what the world thinks love is, from what a hero truly is, to what the world portrays a hero to be, because of these things, Cyrano de Bergerac is one one of the greatest love stories of all time.
Cyrano is a round, dynamic character. Cyrano was a "Gascon," a soldier from Gascony, known for their aggressive nature, bravery, and willingness to fight anyone at any time. Most who have seen Cyrano remember him for his ridiculously large nose. Cyrano had great knowledge of the world. The most important thing in the world to Cyrano was love. He would cross over into enemy territory just to mail love letters to Roxane, who did not even know that the letters were from Cyrano. Cyrano's deep poetic words capture who he truly is. When Cyrano says, "My heart always timidly hides itself behind my mind." people can relate to his problems, but it is the fact that Cyrano is able to overcome his problems that makes him a hero. By showing his deep feelings, living life to the fullest, and still remaining human just like everyone else, he is able to win the hearts of almost any person who reads the story. .
Roxane is Cyrano's cousin. She is the most beautiful girl in the eyes of many men. Nearly .

every character is either directly affected by her love, or is trying to win it. Roxane is Dynamic. In the first parts of the play Roxane loves Christian for his looks. At the war at Arras she tells Christian that, "Although she once loved him because he was handsome, she now loves him because of his inner beauty." Roxane shows the ultimate power of love over attraction, both at Arras and in the end of the play, when she declares her love for the ugly Cyrano.
