When the United States was founded, the founding fathers stated that all men were created equal. This has been, and continues to be not the case though. Since the United States started people have been discriminated against and not given a fair chance. From forbidding women to vote, to slavery, to limiting the number of certain immigrants, the U.S. has been far from equal. Yes, over time it is starting to get better, but there is still a long road a head. .
Since the U.S. got such a late start on treating every person as an equal, they have trying to catch up and make things equal and just for all. At this point in time though I do not think they have done everything possible for women and minorities. The progress is slow and is predicted to be slow in the future. Until you can convince everyone, that men, women, and minorities are all equal then the problem cannot be fixed. .
In the early days of the country, women were allowed to do nothing but the work around the house and take care of the kids. They slowly progressed and eventually were given factory jobs, but even though they did the same work , they were still paid less than the males. By 1994, women controlled forty-six percent of the work force, but are only expected to control forty-eight percent in the year 2008. ( U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment & Earnings). This illustrates how they climb to equality is a slow one, but with enough time it can be reached. Women of today occupy many of the common jobs that we see, such as, receptionist, and teachers. They are still held back from the high level cooperate jobs and jobs that require a lot of physical labor. In chart number "1" at the back of the report, you will be able to see the twenty top occupations that women occupy in the U.S. As you will be able to see many of these jobs are low level and there is not much room for advancement. .
Women and minorities today also continue to earn less than the male, on average.
