Yeast Lab

Identify the Problem or Purpose of the Lab: What substance will help yeast reproduce the most?.
Background Information: Yeast are eukaryotic microorganisms. Their saccharomyces are very helpful in today's biology studies. Yet, the ease of genetic multiplication of yeast allows its use functionally dissecting gene products from other eukaryotes.

III. State the Hypothesis or Expectations: If I put a 50/50 mix of sugar and water solution with the yeast then it will grow most rapid.
IV. Explain how you are going to Test the Hypothesis or Expectations:.
             Materials:.
             7up soda pop.
             5 grams of sugar.
             15 ml. of water.
             stirring rod.
             yeast packet.
             3 test tubes.
             test tube rack.
             balloons.
             .
             Procedure:.
1.Mix 3 grams of sugar with 3 ml. of water and put it in the 1st test tube.
2.Dump 5 ml. of 7up in the 2nd test tube.
3.Dump 5 ml. of water in the 3rd test tube as a control.
4.Put 2 grams of yeast in each test tube.
5.Put a balloon over the top of each tube.
6.Check your results in 2 days.
             7.Collect and record your data.
8.Clean up your project and put the supplies away.
             .
             V. Data Collection: (this may be in the form of graphs, charts, diagrams, or journals).
Journal- When I returned to check my test tubes I discovered some things about them. First of all, the 7up balloon inflated 6 cm. in diameter. The sugar and water balloon was standing vertical, the balloon contained a little gas pressure, and the balloon grew 9 cm. in diameter. The water with the yeast did not change at all; the balloon was limp with no gas in it. The gas that these yeast experiments put off smelled sour.
VI. Conclusion: Yes, my experiment results supported my hypothesis in saying that the sugar/water mix would react with the yeast and produce and rise the most. Yes I thought that water would react and inflate the balloon somedwhat but it gave off no gas. I learned that sugar will make yeast rise the most and the easiest way, and that it is logic, that is why you have to have sugar to make bread with yeast.
