Barbie

Today there are girls as young as eight years old that have begun the never-ending cycle of dieting. If society continues to promote an unrealistic body image the numbers of adolescent cases of anorexia and bulimia will continue to increase. Like the Barbi twins, Shane and Sia, who were Playboy Playmates in the mid 90s', they too battled with their weight. As young girls, they were obsessed with their appearance, which led them to start dieting at an early age, while they were Girl Scouts both Shane and Sia, developed bulimia. Bulimia is an eating disorder especially of young women that is marked by episodic binge eating and subsequent feeling of guilt and by measure to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting. As a result, in 1996, Sia Barbi's uncontrollable addiction to loosing weight landed her in the hospital due to overdosing on 100 laxatives. As a society, we have allowed appearance to control our views of others for far too long. In order to rid our society of this crippling behavior that has tendencies of deadly consequences, we need to express to young girls that education, self-esteem and moral value is far more important than appearance. If we continue to empower and develop young women rather than feed them with beauty secrets and new and improved diet pills then there is a possibility of stopping the mass production of real life Barbie's. .
Individuals have allowed societies image of beauty and acceptance infiltrate on their own perceptions. Since the creation of Barbie; over 43 years ago, she has had her share of fascinating wardrobes, cars and homes. In 1981, there was Western Barbie whose wardrobe was called "Westward Ho- she fit the cowgirl image in her new western duds. Then in 1985, Designer Barbie made her mark with socialites in her one of a kind assembles designed by Yves St. Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior. Barbie also owned property from her Dream homes, ranches with ponies, and let's not forget about the pink and red convertible Corvettes.
