Being involved in the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's was a very hard movement that a black person was involved in. The civil rights movement was the central social movement of the sixties; it clearly shaped and influenced all that came after it, as well as giving a focus to the white backlash that had begun in the north when white neighborhoods resisted integration. At lot of things took place at this time. Segregation was no longer legal. That meant that blacks and whites could go to school together. But just because they went to school together, did not mean that blacks had all their rights. Few restaurants still didn't allow blacks. Slavery was not legal, though. People started forming groups to help black people. Malcolm X had a group of believers. Madame Bethune was founder and president of the NAACP; Franklin Roosevelt was the founder of the Black Cabinet. All of these groups helped blacks to freedom. Ruby Bridges was also a big part of the Civil Rights Movement. She and Martin Luther King Jr started the bus boycotts and sit-ins at restaurants. Ruby Bridges was born in Tylerton, Mississippi.
