In 1860 purebred African slaves compromised the majority of the slaves in the South. The Indians were the original inhabitants of the land, it was the Europeans that conquered the land, and claimed it for their own.
There was an incident in the movie that is very similar in today's society. A lady in the movie wanted an older grandmother to stay behind, she constantly criticized the elders. That incident is similar to today's society because many young people have no respect for their elders. Another incident in this movie that is similar to today's society is the mentality of the people. Many in that slavery society denounced and refused to acknowledge their African heritage; this is a big problem in today's society as well. Many times you hear people talk about Africans harshly, and also they almost always say that they are not "full" unquote "African American". In addition many Hispanics in today's society refuse to acknowledge that their ancestors were also African slaves they only claim the Euro-Spaniards as their ancestors. .
Ebo is the name of a people in Nigeria. In the movie Ebo landing signifies a place where the slaves were dropped off. The young girl that is continuously running through the movie is a symbol of spiritual freedom, and reflection. The rape of the dark skinned woman in the movie had a serious effect on the Spanish woman because she was with the woman on a daily basis. The family later left for the North in hopes of a better life. In my opinion yellow Mary grandma and the girl that was involved with the Cherokee were most loyal.
