Diabetes

Maybe you know of a person who always drinks diet soda. Maybe this person had to come down off the mound to eat a snack during a baseball game. And maybe this person goes home sometimes, saying they have to check their blood sugar before they can meet you at the mall. If you know a person like this, they are one of over a million people in America who do stuff like this every day because they have a disease called diabetes.
Diabetes can be a very serious disease that should not be ignored. There are so many people in the world that have diabetes and don't realize it! Lets take a look at diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way body cells convert food into energy. When you have diabetes, something is wrong with the production of insulin. Insulin helps your cells take in fuel in the form of blood sugar. If you don't get enough insulin, your cells start to weaken. When your cells weaken, the food you eat builds up in the bloodstream and damages everything from your blood vessels to your organs. .
There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. .
Type 1 diabetes also known as insulin - dependent diabetes and Juvenile-onset diabetes usually is caused from a malfunction in the immune system, when the body stops producing insulin. When you eat, your body takes the sugar from food and turns it into fuel. This sugar-fuel is called glucose. Your body uses glu-cose for energy, so it can do everything from breathing air to playing sports. But glucose can't be used by the body on its own, it needs a hormone called insulin to bring it into the cells of the body. .
Most people get the insulin they need from the pancreas, a large organ near the stomach. The pancreas makes insulin, insulin brings glucose into the cells, and the body gets the energy it needs. When a person has insulin-dependent diabetes, it's because the pancreas is not making enough insulin.
